What is the Rainbow Flag?
So you’ve probably seen the rainbow flag literally everywhere during Pride Month, but do you know the actual story behind those gorgeous colors? The rainbow flag (also called the pride flag) is basically the universal symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and acceptance.
Back in 1978, this amazing artist named Gilbert Baker created what would become the most iconic flag in queer history. The original version actually had eight colors, and each one had its own special meaning: pink for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit. Pretty deep, right?
These days, we mostly see the six-stripe version that’s become the beloved symbol at pride parades, LGBTQ+ events, and honestly just worn by awesome people who want to show their support.
